Our Lady of Guadalupe School,
located in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, provides a wealth of
performance opportunities for its student body, in addition to
a standards-based general music education program. Students in
grades 2 and 3 may join a choral group emphasizing vocal
literature for the very young singer. Grades 4 through 8 may
choose from two vocal performing groups Choral I, an
established performing group of thirty-two singers, in
existence since 1993, and the newly-formed Choral
Too!, which has expanded the vocal program by another thirty-two
seats. All three choral groups are showcased in the annual
Christmas and Spring concerts, and provide an important service
as leaders of song at school liturgies. Under the
direction of Mrs. Janet Cullen, Our Lady of Guadalupe music
teacher since 1991, and founder/director of all OLG performing
groups (with the exception
of the band), Mrs. Cullen has truly given the gift of
song to the school and to the
Diocese.
Recently,
representatives from Choral I have performed
for Futures in Education- first at the Immaculate
Conception Center in Douglaston, Queens on September 19th, 2008 for the
9th Annual FriendRaiser, and again at the Hilton in New York
City, on November 5th for the Annual Scholarship Dinner.
Their rendition of God Bless America at both
events truly hushed the audience and started both nights off
with the true mission of Futures in Education, our
children.
Choral
I has performed throughout New York at local banks,
Tishman Speyer on Broadway, Knights of
Columbus tree lightings at Fort Hamilton Parkway, at the
Mother House for the Sisters of St. Dominic in
Brentwood, Long Island, and continues to make annual visits to
Ss. Joachim and Anne Nursing Home in Coney Island
bringing festive song to its residents during the holiday
season.
Futures
in Education would like to extend their gratitude to Mrs.
Janet Cullen, Ms. Diana Meringolo, the students as well as their
parents for sharing their time and talent with us.
